Previous Return to list of all 40’ and 50’ autocars Next lettering for NYC’s 50’ single-door w/end doors
![]() In July 1941, NYC’s Despatch Shops built 100, 50’ boxcars with an 8’ side door and an end door, under DSS #772B. Classified as NYC’s Lot 693-B and assigned road numbers as Series 92000-92099. These constituted the NYC’s only 50’ cars with end doors. The specific use for this order has not been found, perhaps aircraft bodies or wings, but later some cars had their roofs raised to accommodate oversize cargo. With the maximum approved AAR height of 10’-6”, cars had 5/5 Dreadnaught “B” end with the new stronger round (W) corner construction, Universal Power hand brakes and wood running boards. “A” end had a 5/5 Dreadnaught end door assembly from Standard Railway Equipment of Chicago. Unique to a small group of cars produced at this time were the additional edge under the Murphy raised panel roof, creating double-lapped edges as a further step to prevent moisture seepage. Paint & Lettering: Cars painted with NYC red-brown: TCP-221. Underbody and truck side frames coated with black car cement. Wheels and axles left unpainted and allowed to rust and gather road grime. Lettering all white stencil paste. Note: Up until mid-1944 to 1945, cars were stenciled without the black background in the NYC oval. At the end of this period and up until the modernized scheme was adopted in 1955, NYC went back to having black backgounds in the oval.
